Conceptually, verbs are simple enough. They tell you what someone or something is doing, was doing, will be doing, and so on. They
convey states of being, such as “They were very happy at the fair.” or “She was upset about her grade on the test.” And they link the subject of a sentence with a phrase that describes the subject, as in “He is my brother.” and “She was a teacher for thirty years.” In practice, however, verbs get complicated, especially when you’re dealing with verbs in an unfamiliar language.
